Live From Industry: Tissue Adhesive in CLABSI Prevention: A Review of Successes and Opportunities since Implementation

Patients are still developing CLABSIs under current evidence-based practice recommendations. A novel approach incorporating a TA within a prevention bundle at a tertiary academic medical center unit resulted in an 88% CLABSI reduction and more than 50% dressing disruption reduction. This session will provide a review of the successes, lessons learned, and understanding of future implications of the quality improvement project conducted.? At session completion, participants will gain the understanding of TA impact on CLABSI prevention and the knowledge to replicate a similar project approach.

Maria Eva Andrew is a public health professional with 11 years of experience in infection prevention and control.She has been certified in infection prevention and control since 2016 and has worked in an acute care hospital setting since 2013. She has a masters in public health with a specialization in health promotion/health education and an interest in reaching Spanish-speaking populations with public health and infection control interventions. Within infection prevention and control, she also excelled in peri-operative initiatives. Other interests in data analytics and performance improvement have led her to recently change roles to a quality improvement specialist within the same acute care hospital’s quality and performance improvement department. She has worked at Houston Methodist Hospital, a leading academic medical center, since 2015.

Cristina M. Nuila

Continuous Quality Improvement Specialist and Former ICP

Cristina M. Nuila currently works as a Manager of Quality Care Management and Performance Improvement at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. She facilitates many organization-wide and unit-based initiatives focused on improving patient safety and quality outcomes. Cristina is also a subject matter expert on Nursing Key Performance Indicators and process improvement by incorporating evidence-based practice, FOCUS-PDSA, and lean methodology. She excels in building professional relationships and bridging the gap between the voice of the frontline and the organizational expectations of nursing practice. Cristina maintains her Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) certification from the American Association of College of Nurses (AACN) and contributed as a co-author to the Essential Knowledge for CNL and APRN New Leaders Textbook Edition (2018), Chapter 19: Evidence-Based Practice. Cristina continues to lead efforts with a focus on identifying and designing strategies toward high-priority patient safety opportunities within a collaborative team in an effort to move towards a high-reliability organization.
