Dr. Jon Otter, Director of Infection Prevention and Control, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK will discuss: Is IPC the Enemy of Sustainability?: In this presentation Jon will examine sustainability from an IPC specialist’s perspective, including why IPC and sustainability don’t always get on. He will explain the processes by which IPC teams can look for “win-wins” that satisfy both priorities and will provide some change ideas to get IPC practitioners thinking about what can be done at the local level to get teams started on this important journey.
Professor Mahmood Bhutta, Brighton & Sussex Medical School, UK will present: Throw it away: How infection control practice destroys planetary health and fuels labour abuse the move to disposable goods in healthcare has contributed to infection scares. I will highlight the consequences to our planet and to labour abuse from linear supply chains, and how we can tackle the issue.

Jon is a scientist focused on healthcare-associated infection, antimicrobial resistance, and Infection Prevention and Control. The Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Also an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the National Institute for Health Research Health Protection Research Unit (NIHR HPRU) in Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance at Imperial College London.
Jon previously managed the Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Clinical Infection and Diagnostics Research (CIDR) (King’s College London / Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London) and the Scientific Director of the Healthcare Division at Bioquell.
Jon has a first class honors degree in Microbiology from the University of Nottingham (2001) and a PhD in epidemiology (of MRSA) from King’s College London (2011). Research interests include the epidemiology of MRSA, C. difficile and multidrug-resistant Gram-negatives (especially CPE), antibiotic and antiseptic resistance, the role of contaminated surfaces in transmission, and molecular typing methods including some recent dabbling in whole genome sequencing.
Jon is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath), alumnus of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, and was previously Assistant Editor at the Journal of Hospital Infection, and a member of the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Scientific Programme Committee.
